In this video, we will show you how to draw a cylinder and how to shade it. As a beginner, you may find it difficult to draw a perfect cylinder, but we will show you a simple way to do it.
How to Draw a Cylinder?
Start by drawing a rectangle either vertically or horizontally. Then, draw two ellipses: one at the top and one at the bottom. Both should be parallel and of similar size to the rectangle. The top ellipse represents the top of the cylinder, while the bottom one represents the base. Erase all unnecessary lines inside the cylinder, such as parts of the ellipses that aren’t visible. This will leave you with a clean cylindrical shape.
How to Shade a Cylinder?
Identify the Light Source:
Determine the direction of your light source. The side of the cylinder facing the light will be lighter, while the opposite side will be darker.
Shade the Opposite Side:
Shade the side of the cylinder that is opposite the light source. Start with a medium tone and gradually darken the shade as it moves further from the light.
Add a Gradient:
For the cylindrical shape to appear 3D, blend the shading smoothly from the light side to the dark side. The shading should gradually transition, with a softer, lighter area on the side facing the light and a darker area on the far side.
Shade the Top and Bottom:
The top of the cylinder will have some light shading on the part facing the light, while the bottom ellipse should be shaded darker, depending on the light source.
Add a Cast Shadow:
Draw a soft shadow on the surface where the cylinder rests. This shadow should match the shape of the cylinder’s base and be darker on the side farthest from the light.
This approach will help create a realistic, shaded cylinder with depth.
